Millions of Americans have lost their jobs in the economic downturn. Experts say that most of these lost jobs will not be returning, leaving many wondering how they will make up for the lost income.
Many are looking to the explosion of possibilities for work online and from home. But before you ditch those work suits and load up on new pajamas and slippers, make sure you know how to differentiate between legitimate jobs and those offers that are not what they seem.
Tip 1: If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
The Internet is rife with free at home job offers with all kinds of sensational claims. We’ve all seen the ads and articles that detail stories about someone who lost their job, found this wonderful, yet always vague, work-at-home opportunity, then bang! “I made $6,000 in one week!” Do you actually know anyone who makes that kind of money online or otherwise? These kinds of offers are just too good to be true, and thus, they are!
Tip 2: Any offer that requires money, take a pass on it.
Another very popular work-from-home pitch is the one where all you have to do is “invest” in a course that will teach you all you need to know to make a six-figure income. This pitch is just a sales pitch, not a legitimate offer for work. You’ll never have to pay money up front for any legitimate job offer.
Tip 3: Never provide any information beyond your standard resume.
Your identity can be stolen very easily through fraudulent job offers. Be sure that you use a disposable email address on your resume and do not ever provide your social security number for any job solicitation
