This dentist spends his waking hours trying to cure a disease that would be virtually eliminated if people would just brush their teeth. In addition, this dentist says that 28 million suffer from periodontitis or gum disease in the United States. A lot of people will be affected by this gum disease which would turn their teeth unhealthy during the prime of life. The disease is understandably not lethal according to the University of Washington's center for research in oral biology but still, Americans from different classes are affected for they spend $5 million on oral health alone.

A thorough research in electrical engineering as well as studies in medicine and dentistry is needed to fight against gum disease. Regular brushing and flossing is the most effective preventive measure according to their research. A connective tissue called collagen is held by the teeth in the bone. Plaque is the effect if the wirelike protein called collagen is disrupted which will eventually cause teeth to loosen.

In fact, 99 percent of plaque contains bugs or microorganisms. In fact, inflammation of the gums and the supporting structure beneath it will be the result. If only proper brushing and flossing of the teeth is practiced, the spread and attack of bacteria will be prevented. Until now, the research goes on and people become more persuasive in search for a miracle cure simply because most people do not brush their teeth. But good news from Europe came about a mouthwash which could prevent plaque build up by killing bacteria.

The dentist said the bactericide chlorohexidine was used by the British Army in World War II to sterilize surgical equipment. This sterilizing substance was proved to work as a mouthwash by a Danish scientist but still, it is in need of improvement. After a few moments of applying this drug, it leaves the teeth black quite badly. The Danish scientist said that in effect, one would not be able to taste temporarily.

This molecule brings in more serious problems such as its potential to develop cancer. This is quite a shocking revelation because for a long period of time, this kind of drug with the same structure is consumable for humans and animals. But it doesn't stop there for it brings another problem. That problem is having a mouth that is too clean.

Suppose you could sterilize your mouth, kill all the bugs. Bugs actually fill our entire gastrointestinal tract. They are important to the metabolism of the human system, they aid in digestion, and they make Vitamin K.

I honestly don't know if it would obtain a positive or negative effect if we could get a drug that kills plaque only. I will definitely bet my money on bacteria outsmarting drugs. When it comes to dental care, most people become irresponsible. If only people will be responsible enough to brush their teeth, the disease could be prevented. With this practiced, the disease could be treated. However, I believe that only a handful of people would observe proper brushing.
