The sea is really a wide blue world rife with intriguing characters which comes with several dynamic attributes, one of them is the peaceful giants Humpback Whales. These tremendous mammals are long-finned baleen whale dwelling along all key ocean coasts, (and to the human's delight) they occasionally swim close inshore, in to harbors, and up rivers. Humpback Whales grow to 40 – 52 ft long. Their physical identification comes in black above (with several white below), and they have huge knobs in the head and jaws they use to go after shrimp-like crustaceans (krills), tiny fish, and plankton.

Among the polar waters of the summer season and tropical or subtropical mating grounds of the winter, the humpback is on the migration. Humpbacks are thought one of the most expressive of all whales, singing songs of 5 to thirty-five minutes period, blasting decibels all over the ocean to which only their particular whale counterparts might understand. Aside from the songstress status, humpbacks are also one of the most acrobatic with abilities of transforming a somersault in the water (one of many best parts of many whale watching adventures).

The humpback has one of the most diverse feeding behavior of baleen whales using its most inventive technique referred to as bubble net feeding. A group of whale will swim in a shrinking circle while blowing bubbles under a school of prey. So when the shrinking ring of bubbles circles a school of fish (confining all of them in an ever-smaller cylinder), the humpbacks swims up by their jaws wide open, swallowing countless numbers of fish in only one gulp.

Because of their sheer elegance and beauty (and for others, juicy built), Humpbacks have suffered and a lot diminished in number due to whaling activities. Since the 1960's, humpbacks are protected worldwide, and now their numbers are brought back and continually improving.

The humpback whales (in bands) swim their way in their colossal journeys each year beginning with their feeding sites to their breeding water grounds. Although, not all members of a particular group will travel together; typically, the first to arrive would be the older juveniles (with a lot more travel experience), followed by the mature males (no additional baggage there), and by mothers and calves.

Whale Watching in Queensland commences by July to November with its shoreline being a host for humpbacks for the following 5 months as the gigantic mammals makes their quest from Antarctica to the warm seas of North Queensland (to reproduce and give birth).

At times, humpbacks are seen prior to the annual whale migration time; the stunned audience see the whales romping Sydney Harbor and along the coast (such things happen early as May). During the southern winter, whales coming from the Antarctic voyage north past New Zealand and into Australia's northern coastal waters. On springtime they make a return to the Antarctic. The Humpbacks are visiting the harbor for over many years now during their migration time with hundreds other whales taking the route to warm waters farther offshore.

In the Australia coasts, the northern migratory route of the humpback whale is quite further offshore than its southern route. Whilst the Humpbacks might be spotted from land on their trip north, the chance of witnessing them are very much higher on their return trip to the Antarctic.

The popular areas for whale watching in Australia is the Australian east coast, Hervey Bay and Stradbroke Island in Queensland, Cape Byron and also the Sapphire Coast in New South Wales, Point Hicks in Victoria, and Storm Bay in Tasmania. On the southern and western coasts, the ideal spots would be the Ottway Coast in Victoria, the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight, and Cape Leeuwin, Shark Bay and Ningaloo in Western Australia.
Author Resource:- Brisbane Whale Watching invites you to come on board the magnificent "Eye-Spy" for an encounter with the whales. Of all the great whales, the humpback is the most surface active displaying behaviour that will not only inspire you but leave you in awe. There quite clearly is no better place to observe the mighty humpback than Brisbane's Moreton Bay, recognised as one of the world's best Whale watching areas.
