Specific stones have distinct origins as some are found in deep waters or underground and the natural processes occurring in some certain areas are also responsible for the development of stones.

One stone that is found near hot springs is Travertine. Because of deposition of calcium, these are mostly white or cream in color. These are mainly seen in Italy and used for building purposes. It is also being mined in many parts of the world. The famous Colosseum is mostly of travertine only. It is a natural stone and useful for many decorative purposes because of its bright colour. It is mostly used to make the floorings of the garden and to make sculptures. The characteristics of these kinds of stones are they have pitted holes in them, thus giving an indication of deterioration over ages. Therefore, it's supplied in the forms which is, with filling & without filling. While filling it is given a shiny, smooth and coloured look and supplied. These stones are today popular and so are very widely used. There is a slight drawback because they are a kind of limestone. They may be soft and can't withstand high pressure. Therefore one has to work very softly while working with this form of stone. The suppliers of travertine have got to import it mainly from Turkey, Mexico and Italy.

Another kind of stones which are much stronger than Travertine rocks are often known as igneous rocks like Granite. Though it's mostly grey, its color can vary sometimes because of its chemical composition. These are found as large chunks. Due to its high tensile strength they're mainly used for construction purposes. These days the trend is to make floorings, platforms and tables in granite. They are trusted because they are very resilient and have a long lifetime. They can withstand water, fire, temperature, etc. Aberdeen consists of Granite and it is called Granite City. There are many deposits of granite in the world. England and Scotland are two laces where it is found in large quantity. Their supply isn't a costly because of its large deposit.
