Energy Free Lighting have been the big thing in the garden centres and home improvement stores this summer. They seem to offer great solutions for outside illumination, not only are they simple to fit, but they are also inexpensive and obtainable in various designs.
Is this all good to be true though? Well I am into money saving (especially on fuel bills) in a big way, so I decided to put some to the test.
I decided on two versions. The elegant stalk sort, and a more old fashioned lantern sort. Both are lovely looking styles and very popular choices.
Putting in the stalk type was easy. It was just a case of following the instructions to make sure they were turned on.
Fitting the lantern wall light style lights needed a bit more effort, but only to drill the holes. They looked impressive once up, so it is worth the small bit of extra effort in my opinion.
The directions said that they would need a full day to charge ready for their first use, so this is what they got. When they came on at night it was clear that they could not match the power of a proper wired light, but they did work well as an alternative low light solution.
If I were to do it again then I would buy twice the amount of lights that I would if I were buying wired models. This way you can be ensured of more light and at the cost it is not a demanding investment when compared to the cost of having an electrician fit fully wired lights.
The great news is that these lights are going to keep getting better and better. In a few years they might offer a direct substitution for their wired cousins. Imagine if most streetlights could be changed this way? What a considerable energy reduction this would be.
Solar lighting is just one of the numerous different ways you can diminish both your bills and your carbon footprint. It is also worth thinking about insulation for your home which can help you make large cost savings on your heating bills.
