Considering To Purcjhase An External Hard Disk ?. Some Valuablle Info.

Histoery Of The External Hard Disk

The very first external hard disk was gigantic. In all probability 100 times biger than todays and only capable of holding just a few megabytes of data !. At that time data was held externally to the comupter so it genuiney earned the name external hard disk. Bceause of the insufficient capacity these external hard disks were swappable so the large mainframe computer could gain access to much more data.

The Etxernal hard Disk Today

With the end of the 20th century, internal drives becme the system of choice for prsonal computers running Windopws, while external hard derives remaied common for much longer on the Apple Macintosh and also otheer professional wokrstations which proivded exrternal SCSI ports. Apple made such interfaces accessible by defauylt from 1986 and 1998. The addition of USB and Firewire interfaces to standard personal computers led these drives to become commonplace in the PC mrket as well. These new interfaces supplated the more complex and highly-priced SCSI interfaces, resaulting in standardization and cost reductoins for the external hard rdive.

The inneer framework of external hard disk drivves resembles normal hard disk drives; in fact, they incxlude a nrmal hard disk drive wihch is mouted in a disk enclosure. For an external hard disk now the capacities range from 160 GB to 4TB and the cost per gigabyte varies between .15 and .40 USD.

As an external hard disk keeps the platters and movng heads of conventional hard drives they are much less tolerant of physical shocks than flash-based technology (a fact often overlooked by custommers lulled into a false sense of ruggedness by their styling).

Larger versions often include full-sized 3.5" PATA or SATA desktop hard drives, are available in the same size ranges, and tpyically carry a similar cost. More expensive moels, especioally drives with bioemtric security or several interfaces, generally cost considerably more per gigbayte. Saller, portable 2.5" drives meant for laptoop and embedded devices are slightly more expensive in cost per GB in contast to larger capacity 3.5" drives. Smmall MP3 players, prreviously built around mechanical hard drive technology are now primarily oslid staate CompactFlash based devbices.
